How we developed two new applications in just seven months
High-performance, lifestyle-oriented, and full of state-of-the-art technology: these are the main features of the new shopping app from HSE. The apps (for iOS and Android) were developed on the basis of a completely new user concept and are heavily based on customer feedback. We have tested their functionality and usability with selected test customers in so-called use labs. The result: a powerful and user-friendly app after only seven months of iterative design and development. The app focuses on the live TV shopping experience of HSE as well as the product lineup.
In the context of a tender, HSE selected app specialists DATAGROUP Business Solutions. The use of the agile Scrum method enabled us to communicate directly and online with the two development teams (iOS and Android) at any time during the cooperation. In short two-week sprints, we were able to always focus on the essential functional scope of the respective stage. So at the start of each sprint, we would go over refinements with the developers by discussing the functions we wanted for the next two weeks. Our UX and design expert Smail Smajkic worked on the look of the apps at the same time.
A finished app was provided at the end of the sprint, which was made available to a select group of HSE employees for testing. With the nightly builds provided overnight each day, we were able to immediately view and check the progress of development.
In parallel to working on the app, we have further developed the important interfaces under the direction of Manuel Fenkl, with which our app can communicate quickly and error-free with the backend systems of the shop homepage HSE.de. Our Smart TV apps, such as HbbTV and our Amazon Fire TV app already communicate with these interfaces.
Features of the new app
One of the unique features is live stream shopping: With the new app, HSE customers can now shop for products directly in the live stream. With just one click, users can get additional product information, add the product to their shopping cart, or add it to their wish list. HSE is the first company to offer live stream shopping in Germany and Austria.
The clean interface invites you to browse through the entire HSE range of products. New functions inspire customers and allow them to fully delve into the shopping world at HSE. The idea stories are another standout feature, in which expert tips, trends, and news are presented. These stories are short text/image postings in reference to our campaigns as well as seasonal offerings. Customers can also view and access invoices as well as the delivery status of their order in the app, regardless of which method was used to place the order. Registering is quick and easy via Face-ID, Touch-ID or Fingerprint.
Besides additional payment methods, future versions will also be able to suggest personalized items, recommendations, and style combinations based on the users' unique interests. In the future, the individual content that matches the respective interests and likes will be displayed. A central, personalized search and recommendation logic will facilitate finding matching products and sharing them with friends and the community with just a few clicks.
